"where you look affects how you feel"

a newer approach to treating trauma

In 2003, David Grand, Ph.D. discovered Brainspotting.  Through his discoveries, adaptations, and work with clients, he recognized that the eyes and where we look is directly associated with our emotions and how our brain interpreted and processed our experienced events.  This led David to coin the motto, “where you look affects how you feel”.  But what is Brainspotting?  Brainspotting is a powerful form of focused mindfulness.  This treatment method works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation, and a variety of other challenging symptoms.  Brainspotting treatment can be enhanced with the use of BioLateral sound.  Brainspotting works by locating an individual’s brainspot, a fixed spot in the field of vision that is related to the energetic and emotional activation of a traumatic and emotionally charged issue.  By then focusing on and maintaining hold on the brainspot, an individual is able to begin processing deep in the subcortical brain, which is out of reach by the conscious mind.  This processing helps to de-condition maladaptive emotional and physiological responses, which were developed as a means of survival, and bring the brain and body back to homeostasis.

You may be wondering how this is effective or how this works.  A client receives education on the process of Brainspotting, how it works, and how the brain works, but it truly is a treatment that has to be experienced to fully understand.  The attunement, or relationship, between myself and the client is one of the most important aspects of a Brainspotting session.  You will be provided with a supportive environment to process your trauma. In this process, it is important to believe and trust in your brain and body’s natural ability to heal itself.

“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one.  But it will only grow in the mud.  In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud – the obstacles of life and its suffering…  The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life…  Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death.  If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.” – Goldie Hawn
